Dr Wai Kah Choo

Dr Wai Kah Choo is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the Royal Darwin Hospital and Darwin Private Hospital. Dr Choo is the Director of Heart Rhythm Services for Northern Territory Health. He is also a Visiting Consultant at Flinders Medical Centre and Flinders Private Hospital, Adelaide.

Dr Choo specialises in managing patients with heart rhythm abnormalities presenting in a variety of ways including palpitations and loss of consciousness. Dr Choo performs all types of electrophysiological procedures from supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) ablations to complex arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia. Dr Choo also proficiently implants and follow-up on devices including internal loop recorders, pacemaker, defibrillators (ICD) and biventricular devices (Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy; CRTs).

Dr Choo completed his medical education at University of London, United Kingdom on a full government scholarship. Within this time, he also worked with Professor Valentin Fuster at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, USA. He underwent postgraduate medical training in London including training at St Mary’s Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Free Hospital and Addenbrookes Hospital (Cambridge). He moved to Scotland where he received general cardiology training as well as a two-year fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology in Aberdeen. This was followed by a cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at Australia’s quaternary electrophysiology centre, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, under the mentorship of internationally-renowned Professor Jonathan Kalman.

Dr Choo holds the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Cardiology in the United Kingdom. Dr Choo also holds the prestigious Certified Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS) and Certified Cardiac Devices Specialist (CCDS) qualifications awarded by the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE, USA). Dr Choo serves as an IBHRE Ambassador and serves in several IBHRE committees. Dr Choo is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS, USA), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC, USA) and Fellow of Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ). Dr Choo sits in the CSANZ committee for Atrial Fibrillation. Dr Choo has established an interventional cardiac electrophysiology service for the Northern Territory in October 2017.

Dr Choo is a Senior Lecturer at Flinders University, Australia. Dr Choo is dedicated to education of patients and doctors on management of heart rhythm disorders and holds a Postgraduate degree in Medical Education as well as Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (UK). Dr Choo is widely published and participates in national and international research trials. Dr Choo regularly presents at international conferences. Dr Choo’s area of research is in supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and atrial fibrillation.
